Frequently Asked Questions
Are video sessions as effective as in-person sessions?
Yes, research consistently shows the effectiveness of video therapy sessions. I conduct sessions both on video and in-person. What matters most is the relationship and the work we do together, not the format.
Each has advantages - video offers convenience, in-person can offer a different kind of privacy. I offer both, and we can always switch if your needs change.
What should I expect when we start, and what do I need to do to prepare?
There's nothing you need to prepare - we'll figure it out together. We'll start with a free consultation call to see if we're a good fit. If we decide to work together, I'll spend a few sessions getting to know you and understanding your goals, and we'll collaborate on a treatment plan together.
Why work with a therapist instead of using AI or self-help resources?
AI, self-help resources, and social media can be a good start for building a foundational understanding of your symptoms. But what keeps people stuck in old patterns usually isn't a lack of knowledge - it's the absence of being known by another person in real time. Therapy is about what's happening between us as you're talking, not just what's being said.
The therapy relationship gives you a space to be deeply experienced by another person, to co-regulate, and to build a foundation for trusting yourself and recognizing what healthy attachment feels like. It's something knowledge alone can't replace.
Do you use AI in your practice?
No. I make every effort to turn off AI features in Sessions Health, my client management system. Your privacy is important to me, and I don't share identifiable information outside the scope of my practice.
How often will I need to come, and how long will I be in therapy?
It depends on your goals, your availability, and how you respond to the work. We'd typically start with weekly sessions, set treatment goals together, and check in on those periodically. As we progress, we may shift to every other week or move to monthly check-ins - we'll decide that together as we go.
Do you take insurance? What's a superbill?
I'm not in-network with insurance plans, but I provide a superbill - an itemized receipt you can submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Many PPO plans offer partial reimbursement this way. See Fees & Policy for full details on rates and the reimbursement process.
Do you assign homework?
Our work together is collaborative - we'll decide together what strategies resonate with you. I might sometimes suggest things to do between sessions: journal prompts, books, podcasts or articles, EMDR resourcing practice, and, for couples, exercises to foster deeper connection and communication.
How will I know if therapy is working?
The goal of therapy isn't to remove all conflict and problems from your life - it's to help you understand yourself better and make decisions from a centered, grounded place. Therapy can bring up difficult feelings early on, and that's normal: you're confronting what you've suppressed, bringing dark places into the light. There may be moments when it feels too hard and you want to give up. With time, you'll come to accept those parts of yourself and gain resilience, perspective, and internal strength.
