Frequently Asked Questions
Are video sessions as effective as in-person sessions?
Yes. Research consistently shows that online therapy is as effective as in-person therapy for most concerns, including trauma, anxiety, and relationship issues. What matters most is the relationship and the work we do together, not the format.
Some clients prefer the convenience and privacy of meeting from home; others want the in-person experience. I offer both, and we can always switch if your needs change.
What should I expect when we start, and what do I need to do to prepare?
You don't need to have anything figured out before we begin, that's part of what we'll do together. We'll start with a free consultation call to see if we're a good fit. From there, early sessions are mostly about getting to know your story, what's brought you in, and what you're hoping for. You don't need to prepare anything specific; just come as you are, and we'll take it from there.
Why work with a therapist instead of using AI or self-help resources?
Psychoeducation and AI tools can be helpful for information, but they can't replace the relationship at the center of real change. Much of what keeps people stuck isn't a lack of knowledge, it's old patterns that show up in real time, often in ways we can't see on our own. In session, I'm tracking what's happening between us as it happens, noticing your expressions and shifts in the room, which gives us material that reading or reflecting alone can't surface.
That relational, present-moment work is where deeper change tends to happen. Therapy offers a space to sit with another human being who can feel with you and help you co-regulate. We have so few opportunities to be deeply experienced by another person. That kind of relationship gives us a foundation for learning to observe and attune to ourselves, to trust ourselves, and to experience what healthy attachment feels like.
Do you use AI in your practice?
No. I make every effort to turn off AI features in Sessions Health, my client management system. Your privacy is important to me, and I do not share identifiable information outside the scope of my practice.
How often will I need to come, and how long will I be in therapy?
This depends on what you're working through and what you're hoping for. Many clients start with weekly sessions, especially early on, since consistency helps build the trust and momentum that deeper work requires. Some come for a few months to work through a specific issue; others stay longer for more foundational work. We'll talk about this together and adjust as we go.
Do you take insurance? What's a superbill?
I'm not in-network with insurance plans, but I provide a superbill, which is an itemized receipt you can submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Many PPO plans offer partial reimbursement this way. See [Fees & Policy] for full details on rates and the reimbursement process.
Do you assign homework?
Our work together is collaborative, meaning we'll decide together what strategies resonate most with you. I might sometimes suggest things to do between sessions such as journal prompts, books, podcasts, or articles, EMDR resourcing practice, and, for couples, exercises to foster deeper connection and communication.
How will I know if therapy is working?
The goal of therapy isn't to remove all conflict and problems from your life, it's to help you understand yourself better and make decisions from a centered, grounded place. Therapy can bring up difficult feelings early on, and that's normal: you're confronting what you've suppressed, bringing dark places into the light. There may be moments when you want to give up because it feels too hard. With time, you'll come to accept those parts of yourself and gain resilience, perspective, and internal strength.
